What a wonderfully curious and receptive musician John Taylor is. An artist perpetually searching; through his piano playing he is able to give new life to all that passes through his hands.

And this time with a trio especially dear to him, with whom he had already published for CAM Jazz the beautiful "Requiem For A Dreamer" (which also saw the participation of saxophonist Julian Argüelles). The focus falls on the music by Italian composer Carlo Rustichelli. A heartfelt tribute by Taylor to the music composed by Rustichelli for film and television signed by directors Nanni Loy and Pietro Germi.

"Giulia’s Thursdays" becomes a necessary passage on the contemporary scene in order to understand the evolution of the piano trio. Palle Danielsson on bass is powerful and melodic, a valuable reference within the themes written by the pianist with rare elegance given by drummer Martin France. A rapport of the three, whose common denominator is recognizable in the melody. The lyricism of the instruments reaches unparalleled peaks, and the sensitivity of Taylor returns to us the precious lyrical soundtracks like those of Divorce Italian Style, The Thief of Bagdad or Giulia’s Thursdays.

Già dagli anni Cinquanta il jazz statunitense omaggia il cinema e ora dall’Europa giungono sul tema interessanti nuove proposte. Con il classico piano jazz trio l’inglese John Taylor in Giulia’s Thursdays (CAM Jazz) improvvisa, con il proverbiale tocco raffinato, su otto colonne di Carlo Rustichelli, forse il più romantico (ma un po’ soporifero) dei compositori italiani per film e sceneggiati.

John Taylor Trio “Giulia’s Thursdays”

Il pianista britannico John Taylor, molto apprezzato dai suoi estimatori per il raffinato tratto stilistico e la proposizione di atmosfere di tipo squisitamente cameristiche, regala nelle nove tracce che compongono questo “Giulia’s Thursdays” un elegante omaggio a Carlo Rustichelli (autore di alcune fra le più belle colonne sonore della cinematografia e della televisione italiana). A tal proposito, il percorso ideato da John Taylor mostra nel suo insieme una coinvolgente fluidità espressiva, grazie alla propria sensibilità pianistica e alla partecipazione di due talentuosi partners, quali il fuoriclasse svedese Palle Danielsson al contrabbasso e il batterista inglese Martin France (entrambi già al suo fianco nel precedente “Requiem For A Dreamer”). Il pianista e compositore di Manchester, da tempo alter ego del “vecchio” maestro della tromba Kenny Wheeler, si ritrova a proprio agio con il melodico groove di Danielsson e l’esuberante drummin’ di France che, dal loro canto, riescono ad assecondare il suo lirico e intimistico pianismo. Una velata discontinuità con alcune pregresse produzioni di Taylor si coglie in questo lavoro, in cui un’entusiastica coralità e una dinamica estensione del trio favoriscono un interplay tanto coeso, quanto articolato, intriso di un tipico lessico d’oltreoceano. Per questo, i brani “Canto d’amore” e “Marcia funebre” (tratti dalla colonna sonora del film “Divorzio all’italiana”), “L’onuri di l’Ascaluni” tratto da “Sedotta e abbandonata”), “Guerresco ed elegiaco” (tratto da “Il figlio di Cleopatra”) e “I giovedì della signora Giulia” (tratto dall’omonima pellicola che dà anche il titolo all’album), lasciano scorgere il poetico approccio del trio, con talune sonorità dai contorni arrotondati, levigati, romantici. Dunque, “Giulia’s Thursdays” non è l’ennesima produzione Cam Jazz dedicata alla musica della grande cinematografia di Germi, Loy, Bertolucci, bensì rappresenta il magico connubio fra l’impressionismo estetico di un trio jazz e la scrittura di uno fra i più prolifici compositori del ‘900.
Il lavoro, registrato e mixato dall’ingegnere Johannes Wohlleben presso gli Studios Bauer di Ludwigsburg, mostra una qualità sonica di assoluto spessore: orizzontalità, verticalità e profondità scenica rendono ancor più ammaliante l’ascolto di questo disco.

Auf “Giulia’s Thursdays” (Cam Jazz/edel Kultur) schnappt sich der britische Pianist im Trio mit Bassist Palle Danielsson und Schlagzeuger Martin France einen Schwung Musiktitel des verstorbenen italienischen Komponisten Carlo Rustichelli aus italienischen Fernseh – und Filmklassikern wie “Scheidung auf Italienisch” und gestaltet daraus einen eleganten und ungemein ausgewogenen Trio-Jazz der Extraklasse.

Often underrated – and frequently a harmonic foil for others, in particular trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, for whom he has been a regular sideman – Manchester-born pianist John Taylor is, in his own quiet way, the finest jazz pianist Britain has produced since George Shearing. A rare combination of melodic lyricism and rhythmic adventure, his playing is virtuosic but never verbose, and he has an uncanny ability to get under the skin of a tune. Though he has recorded in many formats over the years, he returns again and again to the trio, and his current trio, with the great Palle Danielsson on bass and heavyweight English drummer Martin France, is a finely honed unit. Giulia’s Thursdays is a collection of melodies by the prolific Italian film composer Carlo Rustichelli which the trio have reconfigured like a suite, the composer’s charmingly romantic themes setting up some taut group interplay from three masters of the art.
