An amazing new work by Federico Casagrande on CAM Jazz. A name already familiar to the Roman label, which had seen him perform on Fulvio Sigurtà’s last album "House of Cards". This cd, "The Ancient Battle Of The Invisible", is great proof of maturity on behalf of the musician who for years has been calling France his home. A work from which emerges the many intriguing facets of this guitarist. Writing, arranging, sound research, makes him a full 360-degree artist and a musician who really knows how to think about the performance, and in a way that is both lucid and dreamy. Dualisms, that integrate, free improvisations that leave room for pieces written with great depth.
Visual music somehow conceived by thinking about an imaginary world that no longer exists: “This time I somehow pictured the music in the images of an epic battle: men running to conquer, fighting, helping each other, revealing their pride and their fears, their force and their weakness, their wisdom and their folly; all this surrounded by the severe beauty of nature”, explains Casagrande “I see this as an allegory of the internal battle that man has to face since the ancient times: the battle between love, hate, desires, thoughts, passions... All these invisible forces drive our actions, our lives.” A battle that cannot be fought alone, but instead finds its arrival point thanks to fellow soldiers Jeff Davis, Simon Tailleu and Gautier Garrigue.

Désormais doublure d’Ulf Wakenuis auprès de Youn Sun Nah, ce guitariste italien s’est fait connaître sous le couvert d’un trio, the Drops (en fait un duo saxophone-guitare plus batteur ajouté), qui s’est construit son historie à l’écart des medias et du territoire français. Federico Casagrande appartient à une génération surinformée (Berklee, cours avec Mick Goodrick, etc.) pour qui le lyrisme s’exprime à travers une relation extrêmement détaillée à l’harmonie et aux modes, d’où ces longs développements arpégés (l’unique objet de Speech et proche de l’étude de guitare classique et le prétexte de 7 Roses ou de Breeze) qui brident le flow naturel du jazz, ses envolées mais comme ses excès de faconde. Volonté donc de resserrer le propos qui nous a séduit avec The Drops, l’émotion perlant d’insidieuse façon à la surface d’une musique d’une distinction un peu austère. Dans le cadre d’un orchestration plus fermée – guitare et vibraphone approchant du monochrome au sein du quartette qui nous est ici proposé -, “The Ancient Battle Of The Invisible ” a quelque chose d’hermétique dont la parabole évoquée par le titre aidera moins à venir à bout qu’une écoute pas trop impatiente. Casagrande et Jeff Davis se situent dans le sillage du quartette de Gary Burton avec Goodrick, mais avec les moyens et l’imaginaire d’aujourd’hui. Simon Tailleu et Gautier Garrigue adhèrent au plus près à cette dansante utilisation de l’espace. À suivre.

Avec "The Ancient Battle Of The Invisible", Federico Casagrande sort un disque conceptuel ayant trait aux passions humaines et aux batailles qu’elles ne manquent pas de déclencher à l’échelle individuelle et/ou planétaire depuis que le monde est monde. Sa guitare, aérienne autant que contemporaine, laisse filer des notes suspendues sur la crête d’un son d’ensemble homogène... mais je ne vais pas faire ici la chronique du disque puisque c’est en concert que nous avons apprécié son quartet, le même que sur le disque, au lieu-dit le Périscope, éminent club lyonnais dont le principal défaut ces temps-ci est d’avoir un préposé à l’éclairage aimant à faire des effets sur le rideau de fond de scène et à éclairer le dos et les pieds des artistes en priorité.
Si le chroniqueur s’en fout, le photographe, lui, fulmine.
À tel point qu’il se demande pourquoi il se rend encore dans cet établissement qui, sans cet inconvénient majeur, est fort agréable au demeurant.
Mais de musique il s’agit d’abord. Or donc, parlons de ce quartet dont la qualité principale à nos yeux est de se maintenir sur le fil des compositions de belle facture entre contemporanéité et classicisme. Leur lecture est limpide et l’auditeur n’est jamais désarçonné, ce qui ne signifie pas qu’il est privé de surprise. La rythmique est présente là où on l’attend et donne au guitariste et à l’excellent vibraphoniste portugais Jeff Davis un socle propice aux improvisations de haut vol, ce dont ils ne se privent pas. L’interaction fonctionne sans aucun déséquilibre et l’expressivité est notablement mise en avant au bénéfice de chacun.
Homogène disions-nous un peu plus haut. Oui, comme le sont les combos réguliers qui servent la musique d’un vrai leader dont la qualité première est de laisser de l’espace à ses musiciens. Nous regretterons au passage que Federico Casagrande ait dû partager l’affiche. Deux sets nous auraient comblé. En outre, la tiédeur du public qui n’a pas pris la peine de demander un rappel nous conforte, hélas, dans l’idée que le concert devient toujours plus un bien de grande consommation. C’est comme au cinéma où le public part avant la fin du générique.
À croire que les artistes importent peu dans notre univers aseptisé. Sont-ils donc interchangeables ? Et le travail qu’ils fournissent pour offrir de la beauté, est-il à ce point inutile ? Voilà que je m’énerve encore... Federico, crois-moi, tu fais bien de présenter tes musiciens au début du set. Sinon, vous seriez repartis comme vous étiez venus : fondus dans la masse. Soyons positif, pour changer. J’ai une bonne nouvelle. Il y a encore une bataille à mener. Une bataille contre l’ineffable avachissement intellectuel qui « illumine » les regards languides des âmes abandonnées aux périls de ce siècle... qui sera quoi déjà ? Ou ne sera pas. Les paris sont ouverts. Le vieux con se tait. Amen.

FEDERICO CASAGRANDE The Ancient Battle of the Invisible

Federico Casagrande, stimato chitarrista che ha stabilito da alcuni anni il suo quartier generale a Parigi, è ormai un punto di riferimento del jazz contemporaneo europeo. Molto apprezzato per la partecipazione nel disco del 2011 di Fulvio Sigurtà “House of Cards”, anche in questa nuova produzione a suo nome, dall’emblematico titolo “The Ancient Battle of the Invisible”, lascia scorgere nelle sue composizioni il saper narrare e descrivere emozioni a tutto tondo. A tal proposito, nel disco si rileva un’architettura compositiva simile a un quadro, una metafora del quotidiano tormento interiore dell’uomo, in cui traspare il riferirsi a quella continua lotta, fra il binomio amore/odio, fra i desideri e i pensieri più nascosti o le passioni più remote. Il lavoro, idealmente ambientato nelle pieghe di un epico scontro, permette al bravo chitarrista di dare sfogo a tutta la sua innata fantasia, portando l’ascoltatore a tuffarsi in quel mondo invisibile, talvolta tranquillo e disteso, talvolta inquieto come nel mezzo di una battaglia, spesso intriso di dejavù e ricordi che emergono dai sogni. L’album, grazie alla complessa costruzione armonica e alla raffinata linearità melodica, pone sugli scudi la chitarra di Federico Casagrande, che conferma quanto già rilevato nel precedente “Spirit of the Mountains”. In questa immaginaria “antica battaglia dell’invisibile” il talentuoso musicista è affiancato dal brillante vibrafonista Jeff Davis, dal solido contrabbassista Simone Tailleu e dall’elegante batterista Gautier Garrigue. Nel succedersi dei brani, le atmosfere si svelano di volta in volta con una forma onirica, che racchiude in sé i fotogrammi di uomini che sono protesi verso l’ignoto, che combattono o si aiutano, che mostrano il loro coraggio e i loro timori, che esaltano la loro saggezza o la loro follia. Per questo, la sequenza dei nove brani scivola via nel rincorrersi di immagini sonore che, dall’iniziale “7 Roses” alla conclusiva “Twilight”, rapiscono l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore in un vortice di racconti evocativi.
La scheda tecnica di questo lavoro dai contorni epici propende nella sua globalità verso un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo. La buona dinamica timbrica dei singoli e la corretta focalizzazione dell’immagine sonora rendono gradevole l’ascolto del lavoro.

The guitar of Federico Casagrande likes to ride the crests of waves rather than dive down and swim furiously beneath the water’s surface. On vibes, Jeff Davis works wonders as Casagrande’s counterpart, keeping a furious pace yet never stepping over anybody’s toes. Plenty of heat, but it’s the serene interludes that make the session. Two feet in modern jazz territory, though I would find it unsurprising to learn they listen to Radiohead on the car stereo. There’s a sensibility on this album for moody ambiance without letting up on the gas pedal that reminds me of some of the better Indie-rock acts. This album creates an environment from the first notes and keeps the listener there until the last note is played. Very highly recommended.

Quando l’epica si veste di tenue malinconia

Sapere a memoria dove si vuole andare. Citazione “contiana” per un piccolo (per ora) principe della chitarra jazz italiana. Con “The ancient battle of the invisible” Federico Casagrande, all’esordio come leader per la Cam Records, si prende tutti i rischi di un disco cerebrale, a tratti ostico, pieno zeppo di curiose e suggestive informazioni sonore.
Chi ne conosce il lavoro, sa bene che Federico ha un approccio tutt’altro che ortodosso. Certo, nelle sue dita scorre sapere jazzistico, ma lui ama divagare in territori più contaminati, entro i quali il sound della sua Telecaster si staglia malizioso e penetrante, tra riff, scale e arpeggi. Senza mai forzare i tempi. Uno stile che emerge anche in questo disco, cui la presenza del vibrafono (affidato a Jeff Davis) conferisce un tono scuro, umbratile. Teoricamente, almeno stando alle dichiarazioni di Casagrande, il disco è la trasposizione sonora di una battaglia, anche se si mantiene ben lontano da tentazioni concept. Il chitarrista italiano, da anni di stanza a Parigi, costruisce temi che si annodano in continuazione, spirali armoniche che accarezzano la sua chitarra mentre disegna melodie malinconiche (“Breeze”) o riecheggia suggestioni quasi orientali, come nelle prime battute di “Arrowhead”, forse uno dei punti più intensi dei cd.
Ottimamente coadiuvato da Simon Tailleu (contrabbasso) e Gautier Garrigue (batteria), Casagrande conferma la qualità della sua scrittura e del suo stile chitarristico, sempre ben centrato (“Fireplace”, “Twilight”), oltre che vario. In “Speech” fanno infatti capolino fraseggi che profumano di classica. Certo, entrare nel mondo di “The ancient battle of the invisible” richiede pazienza, ma ne vale la pena.

If young guitarists around the world are sounding more like Kurt Rosenwinkel with every passing year, the reason is clear: the mercurial American has given the instrument a new language, and guitarists with quick ears have picked it up and turned it to their own uses. Paris-based Italian six-stringer Federico Casagrande certainly has, but then he spent three years in Boston studying with many of Rosenwinkel’s teachers, so it is perhaps not surprising that he is already fluent in the American’s new argot. Casagrande’s voice as a composer, however, is more distinctive, and judging by his third release under his own name, his instincts as a leader are sound. The group he has assembled here, with vibraphonist Jeff Davis, bassist Simon Tailleu and drummer Gautier Garrigue, flexes plenty of improvisational muscle, the vibes and guitar in particular weaving a taut rhythmic fabric that stretches this way and that without ever tearing.

Ambientato visivamente nelle immagini di una battaglia epica, The Ancient Battle of the Invisibile è il nuovo album di Federico Casagrande, acclamato chitarrista residente da molti anni a Parigi, punto di riferimento del jazz contemporaneo sulla scena internazionale.
Ideato come il seguito naturale del suo precedente disco (Spirito of the Mountains), questo nuovo progetto viene rappresentato come un quadro, una metafora della battaglia interna che l’uomo deve affrontare da sempre: quella tra l’amore e l’odio, tra i desideri, i pensieri e le passioni.
È in questa splendida cornice che Federico Casagrande da sfogo a tutta la sua fantasia creativa, portando l’ascoltatore ad immergersi in quel mondo invisibile, talvolta pacifico come la brezza al tramonto, talvolta inquieto come nel mezzo di una battaglia, fatto di pensieri e sensazioni che divengono così reali. Uomini che corrono alla conquista, che combattono o che si aiutano, che mostrano il loro orgoglio e le loro paure, la loro forza e le loro debolezze, la loro saggezza e la loro follia; tutto ciò circondato dalla bellezza austera della natura.
Tutte queste forze invisibili – racconta Federico – conducono le nostre azioni e le nostre vite; e a causa della loro natura contrastante, la maggior parte delle volte, ci allontanano dall’Uno. Anche questa musica scaturisce da queste energie. Grazie a una sapiente architettura armonica e a un raffinato suono melodico, la chitarra di Federico Casagrande (una Fender Telecaster preparata in arrowhead, fireplace e standard) sorprende nuovamente e lo suggella tra i primissimi posti nel panorama jazzistico europeo. In questa “antica battaglia dell’invisibile”, Federico è affiancato dal vibrafonista Jeff Davis, dal contrabbassista Simone Tailleu e dal batterista Gautier Garrigue. Tra le numerose collaborazioni internazionali, Casagrande è co-leader dei The Drops, band indie-jazz parigina che vanta concerti in Portogallo, Cina, Francia, Italia, Ukraina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Germania, Belgio, Taiwan.
