Life Variations
CAM Jazz Presents: The series which introduces prime young talent.
CAM Jazz Presents is a new series that CAM Jazz has dedicated to new talent in both the Italian and international jazz scenes, offering an opportunity for deserving artists to venture into the recording world.
"...Enrico Zanisi has a composing style that is recognizable, without those trappings that are exploited by someone who is seeking visibility now, and an everlasting unchallenged standing. He writes about what he knows first hand. Some initial roughness gives way to a decisive and essential calligraphy, which slowly slides into an elementary way of composing, like all great musicians do and those who are unaware do not. You can quickly realize that the character is unconventional: in these days giving a record a title with a romantic vocation sounds strange, to say at the very least untrendy. Enrico Zanisi, who likes to swim against the current, drives himself into the secret panorama of his innerness through the exploration of the now ascetic and even spiritual frontiers: he plays in an area where romance reigns supreme. In fact everything is the mirror of his way of playing the piano and conceiving music. As a child he played classical music; he then graduated cum laude from the Conservatory of L'Aquila, a species now threatened with extinction. At the age of fifteen he encountered jazz, and soon after began to perform in public, immediately leaving presages for a great future. A future of sublime moments of poetry, licentious and ironic moments, of which he is not ashamed to let flow out from the staves on the score to fill this "Life Variations." Even when the aria becomes terse, in the same manner as the most contemporary colleagues in Northern Europe: in that stratum of treeless land you can imagine the heat of volcanoes, boiling water bursting through the holes in the ground without warning. Everything works, in the music that Enrico has in mind for his new trio, in which he is accompanied by Joe Rehmer on bass and Alessandro Paternesi on drums. A strange anthology of a myriad of ideas, many, with a variety that is also unusual: the re-proposal of In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning as well as his ten original compositions, are written with that joyous, irrepressible lightness that belongs to those rare, lucky artists in order to create a natural fact, like drinking or eating: a state of grace, as a matter of fact. This is a kind of music which gives a different rhythm to our hearts." (F. Scoppio)
