This album marks the veteran musicians' first venture into recording with a string ensemble, in this instance the phenomenal Hugo Wolf String Quartet...
Recorded in his 75th year, and with an instrumentation and rationale that leaves the soloist nowhere to hide, the only element of this recording left to discuss is Wheeler's playing itself. It remains one of the most genuinely spine-tingling sounds in jazz, able to express abandoned joy one moment and the most desolate isolation the next. As has always been his way, on this recording in a new context for him, Kenny Wheeler has once again created music which stands as a personal testimony to his abiding individuality. (S. Spillett)
