Everything In Between
Huw Warren’s new trio album Everything In Between takes the piano, bass, drum formula as a given, a known aspect of a shared musical language, and makes something quite magical from it. Supported by the wildly underrated Dudley Phillips on bass and electric bass and by son Zoot Warren on drums...
In the now eighty year history of the jazz piano trio – Jess Stacy seems to have been the first to experiment with the form – there have been so many styles, repertory gimmicks, add-ons and takeaways that it is now almost impossible to generalise about the format, except to say that it remains one of the most popular and durable in the music. Sometimes, the most effective and surprising approach is simple lyricism. Huw Warren’s new trio album Everything In Between takes the piano, bass, drum formula as a given, a known aspect of a shared musical language, and makes something quite magical from it. Supported by the wildly underrated Dudley Phillips on bass and electric bass and by son Zoot Warren on drums, himself a revelation, Warren shapes a set of original themes and Brazilian classics into a record of deceptively quiet textures, outwardly undramatic themes that conceal rich harmonic surprises, and a perfect integration of voices (no hierarchy here between the piano and anything else) that yields fresh insights with every listening. Warren’s mastery has never been more completely and more imaginatively demonstrated. Everything In Between has “gentle modern classic” written all over it. (Brian Morton)
