Live Al Gabez 2004
...on his new CAM JAZZ album Live Al Gabez 2004 he finds vivid new things to say even about warhorses like “Autumn Leaves” and “Body And Soul”. Jazz is a music of infinite variety, and Claudio Filippini continues to find fresh directions within it.
The piano trio as a form in jazz is probably about 90 years old, as far as we can tell, and in that time some of the greatest of all jazz music has been created in the piano, bass and drums format, to the degree that some might wonder whether anything more can usefully be said. But successful piano trios continue to emerge and when someone like Pescara-born Claudio Filippini comes along with his trio, it quickly becomes clear that there is still a great deal of wonderfully imaginative music to be made. The same applies to repertoire. Filippini, who attracted the admiration of one of his mentors, the veteran American Kenny Barron, is an excellent, instinctive improviser, able to work with no fixed material whatsoever, but on his new CAM JAZZ album Live Al Gabez 2004 he finds vivid new things to say even about warhorses like “Autumn Leaves” and “Body And Soul”. Jazz is a music of infinite variety, and Claudio Filippini continues to find fresh directions within it. (Brian Morton)
