The Bauer Session
Ten years after his premature passing, a solo piano recital by British master John Taylor is set for release. This is a historic release by a very significant modern musician whose posthumous reputation stands as high as anyone’s in the field of jazz piano.
Ten years after his premature passing, a solo piano recital by British master John Taylor is set for release. A major figure in the free jazz movement of the 1970s, Taylor was a member of Azimuth with then-wife Norma Winstone and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. He went on to become a highly regarded composer for ensembles, but it is in his solo music that his true personality comes through most strongly: quiet, deceptively unemphatic, combining freedom with a deep respect for vernacular melody, at all times communicative. This is a historic release by a very significant modern musician whose posthumous reputation stands as high as anyone’s in the field of jazz piano. For lifelong fans and newcomers alike, this is a key text. (Brian Morton)
