Volverse
Volverse is exactness and inventiveness, flawless obbligatos and free improvisation, roles swapping again and again within a quartet that disassembles and reassembles in all possible different forms. Rosa Brunello, who is releasing her third CD as a leader, but second on CAM JAZZ, once again proves herself to be a perceptive musician, perfect instrumentalist, authoritative leader.
Volverse is exactness and inventiveness, flawless obbligatos and free improvisation, roles swapping again and again within a quartet that disassembles and reassembles in all possible different forms. Volverse consists of contrasting tones but also unisons that are far from being dull, thanks to their effective, rich blend of timbres. Rosa Brunello, who is releasing her third CD as a leader, but second on CAM JAZZ, once again proves herself to be a perceptive musician, perfect instrumentalist, authoritative leader. Her leadership is such that she manages to stand out dashingly in all the tracks here but with no intention of showing off her role: she can join in by repeating a note on a trumpet solo or inventively play duets with the drums or else deliver extremely passionate solos. From minimum to maximum involvement, her invaluable task ensures connection, enrichment and creative inspiration throughout the album. Music is the goal, starting from tracks that are meticulously thought out, so that each written part acts as both a secure launching pad giving a thrust to the artistic flair of all the quartet members and a safe harbour after the exploits that cram this album. Alessandro Presti’s trumpet and Filippo Vignato’s trombone form a tight, but also unpredictable pair: they move together, split apart, mutually leave openings for each other’s solos, interlacing each time with Luca Colussi’s multifaceted drums or Rosa Brunello’s crucial double bass. In Volverse, windows or gaps are constantly opened onto unexpected sounds, ever-changing colours, shadowy moods and sudden flashes of light. Rosa Brunello and Los Fermentos are both guardians and promoters of a musicality that can rightly be defined as iridescent.
