Remembering The Moment
An all-star quintet really gets an opportunity to stretch out on this date, with three familiar standards ("Autumn Leaves," "A Night in Tunisia," and "All Blues") clocking in at between 21-24 minutes apiece.
"An all-star quintet really gets an opportunity to stretch out on this date, with three familiar standards ("Autumn Leaves," "A Night in Tunisia," and "All Blues") clocking in at between 21-24 minutes apiece. Jim Pepper, a brilliant tenor saxophonist who did not record enough in his career, takes some fine solos in this format, although trombonist Julian Priester usually takes the honors with pianist Mal Waldron coming up with a particularly intriguing statement on "Autumn Leaves." Although there are not many explosive moments and few surprises, the playing is at a consistently high level, particularly when one considers that Pepper and Priester had never before played with some of the members of the rhythm section."
