"This 1984 release finds pianist Paul Bley in a series of improvised duets with percussionist George Cross McDonald. These two Canadian musicians play in and around one another with a finesse that bespeaks their expertise as improvisers, making the listener wonder why they never played together before. Bley has spent most of his career working solo or with a trio. His occasional forays into duets (among them OUTSIDE IN with guitarist Sonny Greenwich) have yielded bracing results. These ten pieces have individual identities and motifs. Some feature drums as the lead voice, others piano, and all ten tracks are recorded with crisp clarity and a warm sound.
