"Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi is no stranger to tribute albums, with homages to Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans and film composer Ennio Morricone among his post-millennium credits. On Fellini Jazz he turns his attention to "inventing a new and in a completely original way" the sonic world of director Federico Fellini. Pieranunzi addresses six Fellini soundtrack compositions by Nino Rota and one by Luis Bacalov, and adds two originals, crafting evocative, discursive arrangements that transmute the harmonic strategies of Shorter and Evans into poetic personal argot. He tells a story on each solo and guides his guests' ensemble-oriented leading men Kenny Wheeler, Chris Potter, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, all navigating with appropriately off-kilter interpretations that hew resolutely to the melody, through their respective journeys with grace."
