Ten years ago, “FelliniJazz” came out as a real event: it had been a long time since three international jazz stars such as Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian, had teamed up on a record. Enrico Pieranunzi succeeded in grouping them all to experience the dream-like world of Federico Fellini, joined by the then young, promising, and budding saxophonist Chris Potter. Playing but not overly playful, the Roman pianist wrote some amusing liner notes revealing how amazed and grateful he was for having been supported by such valuable, impressive sidemen: “Motian, Haden, Wheeler, Potter… how is it possible? Such a group can only exist in the imagination of a daring record producer, or in dreams”. Ira Gitler’s remarks should also be quoted: “Pieranunzi brings forth a similarity between the way in which jazz players play and directors like Fellini shape their films: «They both aim at looking beyond, all the time, in search of what lies beneath the surface of things. It’s an endless, strenuous effort to express the mysterious and hidden areas of ourselves, where the roots of the subconscious of the human condition lie».” Thus, a “dream team” of jazz, gathered in a recording studio and jammed on famous themes by composer Nino Rota (with the sole exception of Luis Bacalov’s “La città delle donne”), with maestro Fellini’s silhouette clear in their minds. “These players were the best actors for such a challenging musical film”, Pieranunzi explains, building an image that crisply expresses what the record is about.
