It is a mark of great jazz musicians that not only do they show complete technical mastery, they also make powerful creative statements and narratives. In 1981, Gianluigi Trovesi and his trio, bassist/cellist Paolo Damiani and percussionist Gianni Cazzola, followed up their debut recording Baghet with the subtly different Cinque piccole storie, a record that stands alongside a great tradition of Italian storytelling that culminated in the closely contemporary work of Italo Calvino. Originally released in 1981 on the Dischi Della Quercia label, this music comes across today as freshly and urgently as it did on first release. There is nothing undeveloped or experimental about it. Trovesi has been working through the implications of this music ever since, spinning new versions and interpretations with each succeeding record and performance. A rare and valuable opportunity to hear exactly where the story began. (Brian Morton)
Recorded in July 1980 at Barigozzi studio, Milan (Italy)
